(Staten Island/Brooklyn June 19, 2016) Democratic Congressional Candidate Richard Reichard (NY 11 Staten Island/Brooklyn) recommends "common sense gun regulation" as a means of reducing gun violence at a 12:15 June 21 press conference at Richmond County Democratic Committee Headquarters, 35 New Dorp Plaza, Staten Island.

"I respect the 2nd amendment. Nothing I propose today violates the 2nd amendment," says Reichard.

Reichard, while acknowledging the hate crime, links the Pulse Night Club with other mass killings. "Orlando was a hate crime targeting the LGBT community. Those dead deserve a moment of silence. But what do Orlando, Sandy Hook, Aurora, and the Washington Navy Yard killings have in common? They were carried out by American citizens and the weapons of choice were semi-automatic assault-type weapons with high capacity magazines."

In 2015 legislation was introduced in Congress that would grant the Attorney General the authority to deny the transfer of firearms or explosives to any individual on the terrorist watch list. On December 10, 2015, Dan Donovan, who initially supported the legislation, and his Republican colleagues in the House voted against allowing a vote on the bill.

Reichard speculates about why Donovan would vote to prevent action on legislation he initially supported. "Why would Donovan vote against allowing the legislation from being voted on? Because the NRA opposes this legislation and the Republican leadership in the House all have an A rating from the NRA. The Congressman sided with his Party's leadership. I support and would vote for legislation granting the Attorney General the authority to deny the transfer of firearms or explosives to any individual on the terrorist watch list."

"I also support renewing the ban on assault-type semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines," says Reichard.

Assault-type semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines were banned by federal legislation from 1994 until the ban expired in 2004. The Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld the constitutionality of assault-type semi- automatic weapons and high capacity magazine bans.

Reichard favors closing the loophole that allows someone to avoid background checks by purchasing a gun from a private seller at gun shows or online as well.

Reichard says when you vote Republican, you are voting for more than just a candidate. "When you vote for Republicans you not only vote for Republican candidates but for their leadership closely aligned with the NRA, while supporting Democrats results in a Congressional leadership with an F rating from the NRA and a 100% rating from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."
